SLOCUM NOVEL "SOUL
VOYAGE" SETS SAIL
PRESS RELEASE
Port Williams, Nova Scotia
- "Soul Voyage," an award-winning novel by Nova Scotia author
Cameron Royce Jess, is set to sail into the hearts and minds of readers
everywhere.
Newly-released nation-wide
in Canada, the novel is based on the life of Joshua Slocum, born on
Nova Scotia's North Mountain, who achieved sailing immortality as
the first person to sail around the world alone (1895-1898). Jess
takes us into the very soul of the man many believe to be the greatest
sailor of all time.
What the moon landing was
to the 20th century, so was Slocum's incredible round the world journey
to many who inhabited the 19th century. Most quite simply believed
that it could not be done.
"I am thrilled and
delighted that Inscape is publishing this novel," says Chris
Alders, Publisher of Inscape Publications. "Cameron's writing
is rooted in the belief that we human beings are capable of demonstrating
personal growth despite great obstacles and 'Soul Voyage' very much
reflects this perspective."
The partnership between
Inscape Publications and Jess renews a collaborative relationship
which produced the highly-successful 2003 novel "Bearer of the
Chosen Seed," a story based on actual events which occurred in
Western Europe, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec in 1756, one
year after the main portion of the Deportation of the Acadians.
Jess's "Soul Voyage"
captured the 1995 H.R. "Bill" Percy Award " - which
is part of the annually-staged Atlantic Writing Contest. One of the
judges remarked, "What a lovely, lyrical story! I resented having
to put it down and looked forward with pleasure to being able to pick
it up again."
Another was moved to comment,
"This writing is transparent and seemingly effortless, drawing
the reader through the words and into the story. Using dialogue----for
which the writer has a keen ear and a deft touch--interspersed with
bright, uncluttered narrative prose, the story bubbles along, unfolding
at just the right pace and with a satisfying amount of detail."
Cameron Royce Jess lives
with his wife Linda in Hall's Harbour, a fishing village on Nova Scotia's
beautiful Bay of Fundy shore. They have a son, Holden, and a daughter,
Gaea. His debut novel, the afore-mentioned "Bearer of the Chosen
Seed," also captured an Atlantic Writing Contest award. He has
lectured extensively on Joshua Slocum, an interest developed during
the two years he and Linda spent cruising the Caribbean on their 35'
sloop, Rozinante.
Upon graduation from university
Cameron joined the Canadian Foreign Service, serving as a diplomat
in Australia during the height of the Cold War. He was also instrumental
in forging a ground-breaking cross-cultural training program for Canadian
International Development Agency personnel. He later immersed himself
in social housing, aiding many of Nova Scotia's rural poor to acquire
their own homes.
